Reflections
Often in life, it is difficult to remain in the present. We often spend time planning for the future; I was challenged to reflect on my present, including triumphs and shortcomings. What is a triumph, or what does it mean to be triumphant? A triumph is a great victory, achievement, or the joy that comes with winning. To be triumphant is to be victorious, successful, or rejoicing in success. Being able to get up every day and provide for my son is the main focus of my life. I rarely ever take a moment to focus on how much I’ve accomplished. Today, I love the fact that I am a brilliant, educated black woman who uses every day to be an example to others.
Not only do I help and heal people, but I serve as a sister and a mentor to countless young women and men who want to enter the medical field. I provide guidance to my son and allow him to develop and grow into a man. One of my recent triumphs is that he has graduated from high school a year early and started college. This was a labor of love: convincing him to invest in his education and go the extra mile, even when he couldn’t see the result, helping him navigate through school, and assisting him with the college entrance process. Evolving into a woman who realizes the love, ease, and taking time to rest and relax are essentials and not luxuries. I rest in the knowledge that I have everything it takes to do whatever I put my mind to in this life. I’ve proven it to myself time and time again. If you don’t do anything for yourself, celebrate your wins. Rejoice in the things that you are doing well. Survival mode can often make you forget what it’s like to have joy and be carefree.
Living in the present also means evaluating your shortcomings. Underestimating myself is a shortcoming I am swiftly attempting to rectify. If I understand I can do anything, then why be afraid to show it? I was always taught to remain humble. Humility is defined as having an accurate, modest view of your own importance. Those closest to me remind me daily to “pop my shit” and really show who I am. I have found that hiding myself and pretend to be just like everyone else. It’s comical when I think about it. How can I, this little girl who has been excelling since I came into this world, ever blend in and be average? I was born to stand out. When I look around and think about the things that I have actually accomplished, and also complete daily, I am something like a big deal. I also have to learn to prioritize myself. Addressing your mental and physical health and ensuring proper rest are A part of growing; understanding yourself first, then implementing the changes to reach your greatest potential. Spend time each day reflecting on where you are falling short and why. Do the work. The changes you will see in the near future may surprise even you. I leave you as I come, in peace.
